Day Signal, Cone
A black net-type cone that marks vessels under sail and power, and fishing vessels with gear extending far out, in daylight.
Description
Under the Collision Regulations (COLREG), vessels show their status in daylight with black shapes hoisted on the mast. A cone, apex downwards, marks a vessel under sail that is also using her engine. A fishing vessel whose gear extends more than 150 metres horizontally shows a cone, apex upwards, in the direction of the gear. The black netting gives a crisp silhouette at a distance and lets the wind pass through, so it puts less strain on the rigging. It is light, quick to hoist and lower, and stows in little space. Together with the ball, cone, double cone, cylinder and diamond it makes up a complete set of day signals.
