Day Signal, Ball
A black net-type ball that shows in daylight that a vessel is at anchor, aground or not under command.
Description
Under the Collision Regulations (COLREG), vessels show their status in daylight with black shapes hoisted on the mast. One ball marks a vessel at anchor, two balls in a vertical line a vessel not under command and three balls a vessel aground. A vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre shows ball, diamond, ball. The black netting gives a crisp silhouette at a distance and lets the wind pass through, so it puts less strain on the rigging. It is light, quick to hoist and lower, and stows in little space. Together with the ball, cone, double cone, cylinder and diamond it makes up a complete set of day signals.
