Day Signal, Cylinder
A black net-type cylinder that marks a vessel constrained by her draught in daylight.
Description
Under the Collision Regulations (COLREG), vessels show their status in daylight with black shapes hoisted on the mast. The cylinder marks a vessel constrained by her draught, whose ability to deviate from her course is severely restricted, and tells other vessels to keep clear. The black netting gives a crisp silhouette at a distance and lets the wind pass through, so it puts less strain on the rigging. It is light, quick to hoist and lower, and stows in little space. Together with the ball, cone, double cone, cylinder and diamond it makes up a complete set of day signals.
