Day Signal, Diamond Shape
A black, net-type diamond shape that shows a vessel's status to other ships in daylight.
Description
Under the Collision Regulations (COLREG), vessels show their status in daylight with black shapes hoisted on the mast. The diamond is shown during towing operations where the length of tow exceeds 200 metres. A vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre hoists it between two balls: ball, diamond, ball. The black netting gives a crisp silhouette at a distance and lets the wind pass through, so it puts less strain on the rigging. It is light, quick to hoist and lower, and stows in little space. Together with the ball, cone and cylinder shapes it makes up a complete set of day signals.
